Andy Hunter (tb) An exciting new arrival to the European music scene from New York, recording and performing credits include some of the greatest names in Jazz and Popular Music (Richard Bona, Snarky Puppy, Bob Mintzer, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Ruben Blades, Spanish Harlem Orchestra, etc.). “Keep your ears out for Andrew Hunter, a very dynamic, soulful player who radiates a lot of personality on stage.” (All About Jazz, Thelonious Monk Competition review by Bob Jacobson, 2003). “This is one of those rare gems that is worth putting on “loop” to play repeatedly. It is difficult to say which aspect of this CD is more impressive, the remarkable compositions or the impeccable playing and empathetic interplay. Either way, this is music making at its absolute highest level.” (International Trombone Association Journal, CD review by Richard Birk, 2014).
Johan Hörlén (sax) was born in Växjö, Sweden in 1967, and began playing clarinet at age 8, saxophone at 11. He studied classical and jazz saxophone at Royal College of Music in Stockholm 1986-90, and 1995-2010 taught jazz saxophone and led the Big Band at the same college. During this time he also worked as a freelance jazz saxophonist, and played and lead several trios, quartets and other larger groups from 1988 through 2010. Since 1988 Johan has also played lead alto in the Stockholm Jazz Orchestra, and since 2010 he has been the lead alto saxophonist in the German public radio WDR Big Band. He appears on over 100 CD recordings, and has recorded three of his own quartet CDs
Martin Sjöstedt (b) One of the most interesting musicians on the European jazz scene today, Martin Sjöstedt is a highly in-demand bass player who also plays the piano on the same level. Martin was born in Uppsala, a well known Swedish University town in1978. Through his parents and family friends Martin grew up in an environment filled with the profiles of Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Miles Davis. He is currently the bass player for the Stockholm Jazz Orchestra, where he is also featured frequently as a composer and arranger. Outside of the Stockholm Jazz Orchestra, Martin is constantly touring the world as both a bassist and pianist, and his playing can be found on more than one hundred albums.
Danny Fischer<7b> (dr) Bringing a near-liquid fluidity to his playing, drummer Danny Fischer began his early jazz training in the vibrant jazz scene of Melbourne, Australia, growing into a highly successful performing and recording career, appearing on over 50 recordings with highlights including 3 Australian Recording Industry Awards (ARIA) and 2 Bell awards. Danny then moved to New York in 2004 and formed the critically acclaimed quartet SPOKE with Andy Hunter in early 2005. He was an integral member of many other cutting-edge New York Jazz groups, including the avant-garde country outfit Bryan and the Haggards, Jon Lundbom’s Big 5 Chord, the Bill Lee Natural Spiritual Orchestra and Ben Stapp and the Zozimos.
